Quick answer: Dust with a dry cloth, wipe spills right away, use coasters and keep wood out of direct sun and away from heat vents. Once or twice a year clean the surface and rub in a thin coat of furniture oil. Light scratches on oiled wood can be buffed with a fine pad and re-oiled.
Coffee tables
A live-edge coffee table gets the most wear — coasters help.
Desks
A solid wood desk with drawers does best with a desk pad.
Consoles
A solid wood TV console needs only dusting and yearly oil.
Shelves
A solid wood bookshelf should stay out of direct sun.
The first month at home
A newly built piece needs a short settling-in period. Solid wood adjusts to the moisture level of the room it lives in, so give it a few weeks before you add a new coat of anything. During that time, keep it a little away from radiators, wood stoves and baseboard heaters, which are common in western New York farmhouses and dry one side of a tabletop faster than the other.
Habits that keep the finish fresh
- Lift lamps, vases and laptops instead of sliding them across the top.
- Use felt pads under anything with a hard base, including ceramic planters.
- Rotate decor and runners every season so the wood does not tan unevenly around them.
- Keep a soft microfiber cloth in a drawer of the piece itself so dusting actually happens.
When a mark appears
White haze from a damp glass usually lives in the finish, not the wood. Let it dry overnight; often it fades on its own. For a stubborn ring on an oiled surface, rub lightly with a fine pad along the grain, then re-oil just that area and blend it out. Pieces in our desks and tables list their finish type, which tells you which method to use.
